CANDLES

CANDLES
(J.Lowe / Lowe Life Music)

Keith Mackenzie spent his birthday lying sleeping in the snow,
Sixty Candles burning,
What he was doing in the Cup and Saucer Forest no-one knows,
And it all seems a long time ago.

His dog came home without him on that winter’s afternoon,
They searched and found him two nights later, pale beneath the moon.

CHORUS
And the lights from all those candles seem so bright,
But it doesn’t seem to make things any clearer,
And my eyes have seen the story of their lives,
And it all seems a long time ago.

I’d not seen him since that summer that we pedalled in the sun,
Though we were really easy-riding down Highway 61.

We found an old coal track where the rails had long gone off to pastures new,
We found a tall tree cathedral that the pitheaps saved from view.

It was a laughing drinking smoking Shangrilah beneath the trees,
And we swore to keep it secret, just Keith, John and me.

And that is where they found him, and I could’ve told them so,
If I hadn’t been a world away from England in the snow.
