CLEVELAND IRON SONG

CLEVELAND IRON SONG
J.Lowe – Lowe Life Music – 2005

That’s a strange old slant to your tongue man
A bend and a twist when you’re speaking.
Tell me where do you come from,
And what might you be seeking?
From east and west and further still,
Where we face hard work not fear it,
For deep beneath these Cleveland Hills,
There’s strength and men that’s needed.

CHORUS
For we need iron for the bells of Bow,
To carry the tin from Truro,
Iron for the valleys and Rhondda mines,
Iron for the bridges of Wear and Tyne,
And the very best iron is ours to find,
Beneath the hills of Cleveland.

But these are hard hills that we’ve come to,
And harder lives we’re leading,
And hard are the bosses we run to,
When for better conditions we’re pleading,
In every town from eston to Brotton,
We long for the warmth of the sun,
But flesh and blood are soon forgotten,
Compared to the yield of the ton

CHORUS

Men don’t stay living as strangers long,
As choking dark they’re tunnelling,
Aceents, voices, join as one,
For common causes struggling,
These days of hardship must be bettered,
Before our lives are spent,
In union follow Joseph Shepherd,
With Shepherd we shall not want.

CHORUS
