THE OLD DURHAM ROAD

THE OLD DURHAM ROAD
J.Lowe/Lowelife Music – 1983

They say men marched down the Old Durham Road When they’d nowhere else to go,
They marched away for a hundred days To let the people know,
And now when the ghost of those hard times Is back here at the door,
They pay no heed to the marching feet, And the Old Durham Road’s no more.

Our fathers came down the Old Durham Road, In hopes to find a home,
They paid no mind to the cold north wind, Or the roaring North Sea foam,
They slaved away all their lives On both sides of the shore,
Until one by one their hopes have gone, And the Old Durham Road’s no more.

Then their children marched down the Old Durham Road To fight for country and King,
With anxious words like a frightened bird, When first upon the wing.
And though the masters did all the dealing, They sent the slaves to settle the score,
And the lamps still burn for when they’ll return, But the Old Durham Road’s no more.

When the winter came to the Old Durham Road It gripped like an iron hand,
The ground was hard and their fingers scarred By the black North Country land,
And each cold day seemed colder Than the one that went before,
Days black as night seem oh so bright, Now the Old Durham Road’s no more.

And they say change came to the Old Durham Road For the good of each and all,
The trees and fields were the first to yield To the hard grey factory wall,
But now when the works stand idle, it breaks your heart full sore,
To see men and land with their caps in hand, And the Old Durham Road’s no more.

When I was young, the Old Durham Road Was so inviting to see,
It led away to a bright new day, and lands of mystery,
But now I’ve been there and back again, and seen both rich and poor,
The mystery has ceased to be, And the Old Durham Road’s no more.
