THE TIME FOR LEAVING

THE TIME FOR LEAVING
Trad. Arr. J.Lowe/Lowelife Music – 1982

It was the time for leaving, an emigrant I was bound,
To say farewell to the lassie I loved, and dear old Whitby town,
I knew not when I’d see her again, as I bade her adieu,
For I was bound to New Zealand, to see my contract through.

CHORUS
And her eyes they shone like diamonds, as I took hold of her hand,
And her hair hung over her shoulders, tied up in a black velvet band.

We sailed three days, we wee all sea sick, not a man on board was free,
And many’s the time I wished my love had been there to comfort me,
Yes, many’s the time I dreamed of her as I lay in my bed,
And thoughts of times we’d spent as one, went running through my head.

CHORUS

I’m saving every penny when I reach that fair land
And when my contract’s over I’ll ask her for her hand,
Yes when my contract’s over, its then we’ll settle down
And hope that we can live as one in dear old Auckland town.

CHORUS

NOTE – This song was a regular inclusion in Jez’s “live” sets in the early 1980’s and was recorded at the sessions for the 1983 album THE OLD DURHAM ROAD, but left off the original LP. Over 15 years later it was included on Fellside’s CD re-release of that album. Although based on a traditional song from New Zealand, the melody and much of the lyrics are Jez’s own. However it is not included in any of the Jez Lowe songbooks, hence its inclusion here.
