National Theatre project for Jez… Badapple Theatre too..

In an announcement that came as something of a surprise, theatre director Mark Bell posted on social media last week that he is currently working on a new project for The National Theatre with writer Mark Ravenhill and composer Jez Lowe, based on Bryan Talbot’s famous graphic novel “Alice in Sunderland”. Jez spent most of last week at the National Theatre Studio in London, next door to the famous Old Vic Theatre, where workshops were taking place. This has been in the planning stage for sometime, but Jez has typically been very guarded about mentioning it. It’s not known if and when the project will develop further, but he’s due back at the National in late May for further work on it… Meanwhile Jez has also written songs for the new Badapple Theatre production “The Frozen Roman”, a new play written by Kate Bramley, and inspired by Jez’s very popular song of the same title, though the story of the play is apparently somewhat different from Jez’s original song. The play goes out on tour next month – details can be found at… As you may have heard, the social media site My Space has recently lost a huge number of recordings and photographs from its server, and unfortunately this includes a dozen or so demo-recordings by Jez that he made for the original Radio Ballads series back in 2007, and which were otherwise unavailable elsewhere. As with most people, Jez’s label Tantobie Records hadn’t used the My Space site for some time, due to its constant upgrading and increasingly complex means of access, but it now seems that a lot of material has been lost to the public forever… Back in the real world, Jez is with Steve Tilston this coming weekend at shows in Bath and Mottram. Their concert last weekend in Derbyshire included some new material, alongside songs from their duo album “The Janus Game”. More to come, we expect.
