ALIBI CHILD – Jez Lowe (Lowe Life Music)
Child lie beside me, your feet are like stone,
Why come to me, you’ve a bed of your own,
Do you know that I’m weary of lying alone,
Do you know such a thing isn’t right?
Your father he sleeps every night on the chair,
He says he’s tormented by woriies and cares,
And you’d only wake if he creaked up the stairs,
So he stays down there, night after night.
You’re an alibi child, and alibi child,
You’re he’s reason why, and my my reason for,
Everybody can see we were where we should be,
You’re the proof what we did was the right thing to do, nothing more.
When he first lay my skin on these very same sheets,
Just like our lives, they were wedding-day sweet,
But they soured and they slipped out from under our feet,
As they sacrificed workers for wealth.
So we thought that we two would be better off three,
My mother said, “Girl you’re a fool, can’t you see,
If you need an excuse, you’d be better off free,
You’d be fooling no-one but yourself.
I know things are bitter, I know things are bad,
And for all of our troubles, I don’t blame your dad,
But he’s cold and he’s distant and that makes me sad,
I have needs and they won’t go away.
For better or worse, but how bad must it get,
I’ll just carry on as it is, likes as not,
If it wasn’t for you, I’d be off like a shot,
It’s only for your sake I stay.
