DAVIS AND GOLIGHTLY – J.Lowe/Lowelife Music
Folks round here all know one another,
There’s never any trouble and there’s not much bother,
But feuding sons means feuding fathers,
Settling their little ones’ scores.
A boy called Davis, a lad called Golightly,
Best of friends became best of enemies,
“I’ll tell mine if you tell your dad of me,
And my dad’s bigger than yours!”
CHORUS
Oh no, don’t say you don’t believe me,
‘Cos I was there the night of the fight between Davis and Golightly.
News got around like soot from a flue,
And the doorsteps filled for a better view,
As Davis did what a dad’s gotta do
To defend the progeny’s pride.
We watched Golightly stride down the street,
We cleared a spot for the two to meet,
From one to the other welooked and agreed,
We said, “Davis, you’re gonna die!”.
Davis stood five feet in his stockings,
With muscles on his arm like knots on cotton,
When God gave strength out, he was forgotten,
We said, “Davis, you’re gonna lose!”.
Golightly, he could fight like a savage,
With cauliflower ears, but a brain of cabbage,
People say he’s crazy and damaged,
With hobnails on the soles of his shoes.
So face to face they were pushing and shoving,
‘Til someone shouted, “Look who’s coming!”,
And through the crowd came this bloody big women,
Built in the Amazon style.
Now Davis knew just who the boss is,
He she was, his loving missus,
Her father used to breed carthorses,
You could tell that every time that she smiled.
Not a single word she uttered,
As Golightly stammered and spat and stuttered,
He didn’t know which side of his head was butted
As he fell down there at her feet.
So the House of Davis won the day,
And as they carried Golightly away,
We saw the two little boys there at play
Quite happily on the street
