THE FAN DANCER’S DAUGHTER – J. Lowe/Lowe Life Music
The fan dancer finally fluttered her feathers and flew,
Leaving little behind for those left, but what they never knew,
With the taut skin she flaunted all wrinkled and old,
What she never displayed, what she never told,
The fan dancer’s daughter ahs chanced upon, bolt from the blue.
A box ‘neath the bed where she died, you couldn’t call hid,
She’d long meant to put a last match to, but she never did,
Under ration-books, divvies and sepia histories,
Ripe to unravel, a silk-knotted mystery,
The fan dancer’s daughter has finally lifted the lid.
A rich Northern family hushed up their blush, I suppose,
When their son took a wife from a spotlight where they never close,
After gallants and goons had wined her and dined her,
She shivered as plumed quivered front and behind her,
Now the fan dancer’s daughter has chanced on what nobody knows.
Stage-door squaddies and toffs with their roses and faffs on the town,
Most of them pushing up daisies today, I’ll be bound.
Then the beauty of youth began to forsake her,
A kiss from a prince won’t come now to wake her,
And the fan dancer’s daughter she weeps for the queen that they crowned.
And the fan dancer’s daughter is dancing in fine feather down.
